Quick Tips From Jobseekers Age 50+ Who Landed Work
Fast Tips From Jobseekers Age 50+ Who Landed Work Fast Tips From Jobseekers Age 50+ Who Landed Work While indications old enough segregation can begin to show up as youthful as 40, develop, experienced applicants are finding the employments they need all day every day. They're normal individuals â" no enchantment dust, no mystery ingredient. Quest for new employment now in your profession direction involves grasping the idea that, what got you here, won't get you there. The pursuit of employment systems you used to land your latest job a couple of years back are a long way from the pursuit of employment methodologies you'll have to utilize today. Following are the exercises fruitful up-and-comers applied. They all spoke about their pursuit of employment excursions and extreme examples of overcoming adversity on LinkedIn: Signal Up The Right Keywords What I truly was a strong comprehension of how applications are handled, and that it is so imperative to focus on the distinctive catchphrases for each activity you need to apply for. â" Laura Durst LinkedIn has as of late given us a blessing, as serious knowledge in regards to the employment opportunities it promotes. LinkedIn discloses to us what number of candidates there are all out, what number of in the previous day, and the piece that, as I would see it, is totally significant: Top Skills. LinkedIn mentions to us what the top abilities are, demonstrates the ones you as of now have in your profile, and discloses to us the ones you need. At the point when I call attention to the top abilities LinkedIn says an up-and-comer needs, I pose a basic inquiry: Do you do these things? 99.9% of the time, the appropriate response is a reverberating, Yes! This is low-hanging natural product, so act in your own wellbeing and get it! LinkedIn is actually letting you know these are the aptitudes the calculation needs to see, and these are the abilities the leader needs to see. There is no preferable manual for keywording over this. You don't need to figure. You don't need to ponder. Furthermore, you don't need to succumb to a resume and LinkedIn profile that discussions such a great amount about the amount of a multi-faceted self-starter you are (on the grounds that those are NEVER the catchphrases LinkedIn is revealing to you it needs!) Avoid The Internet Black Hole By maintaining a strategic distance from the online resume accommodation Strange place, and working with genuine individuals, I had direct contact with 26 selection representatives and went on 17 in-person meets. One specific scout discovered me on LinkedIn about an occupation AT LinkedIn. It took a month and a half from when she previously called me until I got the offer! â" Mark Hall This is the place the numbers game comes in. You can pile on the numbers by sitting at your PC 7 evenings seven days applying and submitting. LinkedIn, Indeed, and the major online activity loads up make it so natural: you can transfer your resume 1 time, and with only a couple of snaps present that continue for handfuls and many employments. Or then again you can pile on the numbers the manner in which Mark did. It's not the quantity of chances that is significant. Or maybe, it's the quantity of associations you make with genuine people. The system that works is to really seek after less chances, however make increasingly important associations for every chance. Make it your propensity to distinguish a pertinent individual for each job you apply for. In the event that you truly need to go further, distinguish 3, 5, or 8 pertinent people â" they're all on LinkedIn. I've seen truly decided competitors recognize upwards of 25. Send every one of them a short message; it very well may be a similar message. It's for all intents and purposes ensured that your reactions will come. Figure it might be amateurish to contact various individuals? They're probably not going to get together, discussing their messages, saying they can't trust you kept in touch with every one of them immediately â" nobody possesses energy for such discussions. Don't excessively worry about what individuals will think. On the off chance that the beneficiary has a reaction, they'll react. On the off chance that they don't have anything to state, they won't. In any case, when you make this training a customary part of your pursuit of employment group, somebody will react! Realities Tell. Stories Sell. One thing that was incredible were the meeting prep meetings. I utilized stories, truly made sense of what they were searching for, and how it identified with what I had done. Kate Leger Consider the last time you heard a great speaker, somebody who just impacted you. For what reason did what they state hit home? The appropriate response is likely in light of the fact that they recounted to a story you could identify with your life. Without a doubt, they additionally discussed a portion of their skill, whatever book they composed, or program they spoke to. In any case, a compelling, connecting with speaker catches your consideration by pulling you in with story, sprinkling in certain realities/target data, at that point shutting with more story. You have to lead your meetings a similar way. For instance, the questioner could solicit, What sort of an individual would your collaborators state you are? Pretend in your psyche that the inquiry wasn't, what might they say, but instead, what did they say. This moves your answer from the theoretical, where the story didn't generally occur â" to this present reality, where the story really occurred. The way in to an inquiry like this is to initially give the mentioned answer: They would state I'm principled and thinking about what I do and the individuals I serve. Then quickly back that up with story. Story brings the modifiers, upright and mindful from the degree of self-salutary, to the degree of representation and activity. The story can be, There was a period in my last social work position that I expected to manage a family in which the dad was confronting end of his parental rights. I didn't pass judgment on him or the family for what had gone on that carried them into the circumstance. I simply gave a touch of additional opportunity to become acquainted with them, exhibit that I thought about them, and I truly focused on the individual needs of each parent and the youngsters. The guardians looked for singular treatment; the family took an interest in bunch treatment; and after a period the family was brought together. Each meeting answer should be the appropriate response + the story. That is the manner by which you separate yourself, since everybody can say some descriptive word regarding oneself, yet no one but you can recount to your story. Presently you're self-deciding for not removing yourself from the show and start to question your own adequacy. You begin losing rest and wake up in the center of the night, running the day's discussions over in your mind. Lately, I've been feeling overpowered and sucked in by someone else's tension. Dramatization is made when an individual can't acknowledge the manner in which they feel so they attempt to externalize it or put that feeling off on others, for the most part in a profoundly expressive or frantic manner. This conduct gives them a transitory yet impractical help from their uneasiness. Consequently, they proceed with the dramatization move to attempt to dump their despair. I notice I have been feeling on edge and accepting the tension of this individual. I've started feeling that I won't have the option to achieve what I have to complete when I know I'm able. How to keep in contact with your network when youre not looking for a job - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach
Instructions to stay in touch with your system when youre not searching for an occupation Systems administration isn't a procedure many occupation searchers are especially alright with, yet it very well may be a powerful method of discovering openings. Be that as it may, a great many people I know arent truly adept at staying in contact with their contacts, until something happens to cause them to acknowledge they need them. Getting in contact with your system just when you need something from them certainly isn't what you'd call viable systems administration. Regardless of whether you are not effectively searching for a new position, systems administration will assist you with establishing a wide scope of contacts who can extend your insight into your industry. Obviously, in the event that you are work chasing, organizing is basic. In todays work advertise, a noteworthy level of positions are filled through close to home and business associations. Subsequently, the more connections you can build up, the more noteworthy your odds of finding out about openings before they are publicized. Having a wide system gives you an upper hand over other occupation searchers, particularly in the event that you work in a truly specific order/division. Here are my 5 hints on the most proficient method to stay in contact with your contacts: 1) Revive your contact list Dont approach your contacts through and through for their assistance getting a new line of work â" it places them in an awkward position where they may need to disapprove of you and no one prefers doing that. As a Sr. Enrollment specialist, I get such huge numbers of messages from virtual outsiders who anticipate that me should get them a line of work despite the fact that I have never enlisted in their subject matter and I've never met them â" it's anything but an exceptionally successful technique. Rather, if conceivable, go to your contacts with something to offer them. Doing so will build your odds of hearing something from them which may profit you. 2) Personalize your methodology. Discover some data that may be valuable to every individual you need to contact. For instance, on the off chance that you find out about an opening for work you realize they'd be keen on, a fascinating article or an occasion â" let them know. In the event that it is of some incentive to them, it will offer you a chance to start your discussion. In the event that you cannot discover anything to offer your contacts, your second most ideal alternative would request their recommendation or a feeling. For instance you may inquire: Im taking a gander at an occupation in your industry and Id like to discover increasingly about whats going on, would it be conceivable to have a brisk talk? or then again My profession advancement to date has been very like yours and as Im contemplating my following stage, I was thinking about whether I could orchestrate a fast call to converse with you quickly about your encounters? The extraordinary thing about inquiries like these is that they dont put a spotlight on your contact, so they don't feel compromised and in all probability they'll feel complimented a piece since you are regarding them as a specialist. Notice I've said a 'brief talk'. By and by, I am increasingly disposed to address somebody in the event that I realize they won't attempt to utilize an hour of my time. 3) Keep Building a Career Network You dont need to invest a great deal of energy organizing, however ensure you set aside the effort to include associations with your system a customary premise. The greater your system, the more open doors youll have when youre work looking. Don't hesitate to associate with me on LinkedIn: uk.linkedin.com/in/margaretbuj/ 4) Stay Connected to Your Network Probably the greatest error is disregarding your system once you've constructed it. Its significant that your associations realize you are there. Post notices on LinkedIn or Facebook if fitting, present fascinating connections on your person to person communication pages and so on. In the event that you have a blog that is fitting for proficient associations with read, share it on long range informal communication pages. I extend to bunches of talking and employment opportunity search counsel on my blog: https://meet coach.co.uk/blog/ When a week or somewhere in the vicinity, email or send a LinkedIn message to express 5 associations with ask how they are getting along. At the point when you keep in contact with your associations, it shows that you care about how they are getting along. On the off chance that youre drew in and intrigued, your contacts will be bound to support you if and when you need it. With the associations you are sufficiently close to meet face to face, have some espresso or lunch now and again. 5) Expand your system by going to occasions Perhaps the most ideal approaches to extend your system is by going to occasions pertinent to your industry/specialized topic. A great many people are all the more ready to talk at gatherings or occasions than when they are occupied in the workplace. Prior to heading off to any occasion, make a point to get your work done. Peruse the associations bulletin or visit its site the more information you have, the more educated youll be the point at which you begin talking with individuals. On the off chance that you need to meet a particular individual at the occasion, attempt to locate a current contact who can acquaint you with this individual. On the off chance that this is absurd, hang tight for a fitting second and make the presentation yourself. At that point, inquire as to whether the individual has a second or two. It is ideal to begin with a protected, agreeable theme. This is the place the time you've spent finding out about the association or applicable issue, will truly prove to be useful. You can begin the discussion by talking about an issue identified with the association or point itself, and later inquire as to whether its conceivable to contact this individual sometime in the not too distant future. After the gathering, send a card to say thanks to them and catch up with an email a couple of days after the fact. Recall that systems administration is a procedure. You have to adopt an organized strategy when fabricating your system, meeting new individuals and helping other people. Treat organizing with the equivalent dilligence you bring to your every day work, and after some time youll yield huge advantages. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Margaret Buj is a meeting and vocation speeding up mentor who has practical experience in helping other people to find what their one of a kind qualities are so they feel certain about selling themselves easily and certainty during prospective employee meet-ups. How To Nail Those Clichéd Interview Questions - Jobscan Blog
The most effective method to Nail Those Clichéd Interview Questions - Jobscan Blog Posted on January 18, 2017November 12, 2018 by Chason Gordon It would be pleasant if prospective employee meeting questions just included being gotten some information about your preferred nourishments and films, with the questioner saying, I love Happy Feet as well! Let me demonstrate you to your work area. Anything would be better than responding to the innately cumbersome inquiries that questioners have been posing since clipboards were created. Be that as it may, they continue asking them, thus we should continue noting them. As old hat as they seem to be, the inquiries questions can offer understanding into how you think, so gives up over some non-old hat answers to them. Where do you see yourself in five years? Except if youre a character in a sci-fi film who encounters the entirety of time, responding to this inquiry can be extreme. How might anybody know where theyll be in five years? I experience difficulty knowing where Ill be in a short time. The last time I was asked this in a prospective employee meet-up, I stayed there for a long time attempting to think about an answer. We took washroom breaks. The questioner is attempting to survey whether your profession objectives fairly line up with the companys objectives. For example, on the off chance that you were meeting with an advertising firm and your response to the five-year question was that you saw yourself playing in the NBA, they likely wouldnt employ you. You dont need to lie and disclose to them you consider yourself to be a senior official at the organization, yet offer a response which proposes an energy and aspiration for the business itself. The more excited, the better. Dont stress over being somewhat off. Dislike the questioner is going to monitor you following five years. Hang tight, theres a thump at my entryway. What are your salary desires? Its surely enticing to stand up for yourself with the old pay question. I need 90 stacks, an organization Aston Martin, a 78 gallon piranha tank, and my own private washroom and solarium. OK? However, that probably won't be a decent methodology. This is one of those inquiries addresses where its best to as brief as could reasonably be expected. Focus on a compensation extend that the two causes you to feel good, and doesnt undersell you or alarm the organization away (the most reduced range ought to be in any event 5k over what you practically would make, since they may go lower). On the off chance that you need to be truly short simply state, Im searching for remuneration that is proportionate with my experience. It makes you sound brilliant. Find out additional: How to reply, What are your compensation desires? Whats your greatest blemish? This appears to be a stunt question, and it presumably is, yet the questioner is principally inquisitive to see your degree of mindfulness. You dont need to state something like, What the hellfire is that expected to mean? What are your imperfections?!? Since it feels like theres no incredible response to this inquiry question, attempt to be earnest and essentially depict a defect that isnt vital to the position itself. So if the activity expects you to by hyper-composed, dont let them know youre sloppy, and in the event that it requires organizing, dont notice that youre modest. Don't hesitate to adopt the unassuming boast strategy, as in, I experience difficulty appointing, since I'm increasingly sure about my own capacities. Try to state it in the past tense, and depict what you did or are doing to fix it. Inform me regarding yourself Maybe the most alarming inquiry out there (alongside the terrifying Whats your story?), individuals will in general make some hard memories depicting themselves. The human life is a continually changing artistic expression which cannot be dense into an insignificant sentence, at any rate that is the thing that we like to let ourselves know. Typically I simply react, I like cheddar. You can improve. Make an effort not to just disgorge essential subtleties that the questioner definitely knows. Im a human male that requires oxygen and love. Instead, select to tell an expert story that both uncovers a touch of your character, and shows your enthusiasm for the business itself (and not about the time you spiked the water cooler). In the event that none ring a bell, portray who you are outside of whats on your resume, maybe examining how your childhood affected your vocation aspirations. On the off chance that you need to jazz it up, get under a highlight and do a detailed move routine about your life, which can crescendo with you sliding on your knees and getting a top cap. Or on the other hand simply utilize your words. Regardless of how you answer, attempt to keep it compact, and ensure you end with and that is the manner by which I spared Christmas. For what reason do you need this activity? Truly you dont need this activity, you need to experience a daily reality such that the mists are made of cotton sweets and bills can be paid for by whistling. In any case, youll need to think of an answer, and not simply state retribution or the restroom is for workers as it were. Maybe you like the work itself, or the organization has discharged intriguing items, or you want to bring something new. Whatever the explanation, demonstrate that you really need to be there. You need to be there, isn't that so? In your answer, attempt to interface both your own and expert interests to the activity itself, with the goal that taking the activity seems like a characteristic subsequent stage in your life. You cannot turn out badly there. Where you can turn out badly is remaining calm and basically scouring your thumb against your list and center fingers to demonstrate cash. Dont do that. Do you have any inquiries for me? Past asking where the washroom is or on the off chance that they approve stopping, it very well may be hard to pose inquiries after youve been noting them for such a long time. The inquiry feels like the questioner is being destitute, as though a companion is stating, Arent you going to get some information about my day? Its in every case best to pose inquiries before this point, yet regardless, accept the open door to show your energy for the organization and the position. Approach them what theyre seeking after the job itself. Or on the other hand inquire as to whether theres anything in your own experience that could be improved to more readily line up with the position (this inquiry shows modesty). In the event that you need to confound them, ask, Where do you see me in five years? This is the least demanding piece of the meeting to plan for ahead of time. Simply think of a couple of inquiries, a couple follow-up questions, and afterward close everything off by saying, Im sorry, were out of time. How To Approach Companies For Voluntary Work In The Digital Sector
How To Approach Companies For Voluntary Work In The Digital Sector Here at Bubble Jobs, we know first-hand how much employers value candidates who have some commercial, first-hand experience under their belts which is why were always advising jobseekers to try and go out and get some kind of work experience. Now, as you can see from these blogs, one thing we always tell jobseekers to do this is to go out and volunteer to do some work for a local charity or business ie. anyone who could do with an extra helping hand when it comes to digital tasks but who doesnt necessarily have the budget to employ someone to do them. As you can see from this blog, weve covered how to approach companies for digital work experience before, so today I wanted to focus specifically on how to approach companies for voluntary work in the digital sector the kind that lasts for a few months/a prolonged period, rather than just a few weeks. 1. Do Your Research: Whether its a charity or a local family-run business, the first thing that you need to do is a bit of research on the company. Look at their current digital presence and consider where you think improvements could be made. Also check out which employers they have listed on LinkedIn the last thing you want to do is volunteer to take a current employees existing position! 2. Consider How You Could Help: Take some time to consider what the companys aims are (eg. increasing brand awareness, increasing sales etc.) and how you could help them to achieve these with your existing skills and knowledge. For instance, if youre an established Twitter user, you could volunteer to take over the companys Twitter account or even create a new one and build it up if they dont have an existing Twitter account. 3. Make A Plan: Its great that youre volunteering but in order to get the company to take you seriously, you need to come up with a plan of what you want to do and what you think it will achieve for them. OK, so theyre probably not going to pay you a penny but its still their reputation thats on the line (particularly if you want to handle something like social media or email marketing) so theyre still going to need to invest in you in some way. As I mentioned in that last point; you also need to consider the companys aims and ensure your plan ties in with that. For instance; if the company mainly sells products for those aged 70+, social media probably wont be a relevant channel for the majority of their customers so volunteering to set up and handle their social media accounts would probably be a waste of time for everyone and probably wouldnt affect their bottom line. 4. Reach Out: Once youve got your plan in place, its time to reach out. Take a look at their Contact Us page to see how they prefer to be contacted and drop them an email/call to introduce yourself and see if you can go in and meet them in person. Hint: dont send your plan over with your initial intro. Why? Because it can come across as a bit full-on and it might be a bit overwhelming, particularly if the company hasnt necessarily embraced digital fully yet. 5. Expand Your Network: Once youve got your foot in the door of that first company/charity, its time to reach out to other similar companies in other niches to see if you can volunteer to help them too. If you do this, youll start to build up a portfolio of clients which will look great on your CV and will show an employer that multiple companies have trusted you with their digital work over the last year or so. Similarly, you never know who youre going to bump into again later in your career. Everyone who you speak to at the very start of your career will form the beginnings of your network for the future. You never know; someone who you work with now when youre volunteering might pop up later on in your career at a very valuable stage! That said; the more contacts you can make now, the better!

A Beginners Guide to a Product Management Career - The Muse
A Beginner's Guide to a Product Management Career - The Muse A Beginner's Guide to a Product Management Career I recall the main school class I at any point took where I really read the relegated readings every week just in light of the fact that I was keen on what I was realizing. Up to that point I had gotten an expert skimmer and was persuaded I could never locate the correct major. That class was human-focused plan, and it is the thing that I think about the beginning of my vocation in item the executives. I simply found the convergence between taking care of issues with innovation and how individuals really utilize that innovation so completely entrancing. You may've recently found out about item the board too and are pondering, Could that field be directly for me? Or, perhaps you've been contemplating it for some time and still aren't sure precisely what it would involve. While most item supervisors are glad to converse with somebody keen on the field to help show signs of improvement feeling of the activity, there are things that you can do on your own first to respond to a portion of your inquiries. Along these lines, in an imaginary world, on the off chance that I was attempting to make sense of in the event that I needed to seek after this expertly, here are simply the three things I would advise to do at the present time. 1. Peruse These Books Item the executives' picked up fame throughout the last 10 or so years on account of extraordinary item organizations like Apple, Facebook, and Google. In any case, since it's new doesn't mean there isn't heaps of incredible substance effectively out there! These three books specifically are each moderately snappy peruses and they spread the basic ideas. The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman This book is extremely more about structure and convenience than severe item the executives. It is the thing that began me considering everything in life as an item! It'll settle on you understand that each and every choice that goes into making even fundamental things like an entryway or a seat has exchange offs. Furthermore, those exchange offs influence how individuals will (or won't) use what you make. You will know promptly if pondering structuring things for individuals is something you have an enthusiasm for or not. Enlivened: How to Create Products Customers Love by Marty Cagan This is one of only a handful hardly any books that genuinely responds to the inquiry, What the hell does an item director really do throughout the day? Marty Cagan is one of the adoptive parents of item, and in this he separates the entirety of the obligations of the job and offers incredible certifiable guidance on the best way to successfully achieve every one of them. The Innovator's Dilemma by Clayton Christensen In item, and business as a rule, you'll frequently hear references to the ideas from this book, so you may imagine that you realize the thoughts all around ok. You don't. You have to peruse this book yourself to truly value the ideas. Noted item the board writer, Ken Norton portrayed it in his popular Books for Product Managers blog entry as, The most significant book of the previous fifty years. In case you're an innovation PM and you haven't read Christenson, do so at the present time. I tuned in to him and he was correct. 2. Bookmark These Blogs Now and Read All Past Posts (But Really) There are a great many item and tech writes out there that are acceptable, however one of the principal things you should learn as a PM is the means by which to organize. In this way, on the off chance that you needed to pick just a couple of approaches to get your data every week, these eventual my picks. Marty Cagan's Blog On the off chance that his name sounds recognizable, this is on the grounds that we just talked about him a couple of sections back. In case you're attempting to get into this industry, you'll have to realize how to do things like characterize item standards and make a guide. Cagan will disclose to you how to do these things. The beneficial thing for you is that while many individuals right now in the field may have more understanding than you, they despite everything do these things wrong. Thus, finding out about them from somebody like him will at any rate let you start on the correct foot with no bringing any unfortunate propensities along. Ken Norton's Blog Indeed, this name once more! Norton's generally well known for instructing us to continually bring the doughnuts. He has long periods of involvement with item, most prominently at Google, and now as an accomplice of Google Ventures. A portion of his most popular presents remember What For Do in your First 30 Days as a PM (I kept these standards in my initial 30 days at The Muse and it served me well), How to Work with Software Engineers, and How to Hire a Product Manager. You can buy in to his week after week bulletin to get great understanding into the comparable issues all item chiefs face. TechCrunch Alright, so you don't have to peruse every single past post for this one-that would not be a decent utilization of your time. However, being an item supervisor in the advanced world will require monitoring what's happening in the business, regardless of whether that is new advances being discharged, ongoing subsidizing rounds or acquisitions, or only experiences into new items across various parts. There are heaps of online journals you can use to get this data (like Hacker News, Gizmodo, etc), so it doesn't just should be TechCrunch. In any case, pick your top choices and start expending this data day by day. ProductHunt The measure of great items out there is rousing! ProductHunt will acquaint you with new ones every day that you can gain from, and even conceivably use to make your life simpler. 3. Begin Thinking in a Product Mindset for Everything You Do Every Day Now, if the field despite everything intrigues you, welcome! You're going to enter an unusual world that is wonderful and energizing, where your work is rarely finished and your clients issues will never be 100% illuminated. You'll before long understand the manner in which you consider all that you use in your life will change. Have you at any point attempted to buy something on your telephone and you nearly tossed your telephone over the room out of disappointment while attempting to finish the buy structure? Well think about what-an item chief was answerable for pushing that live (with the assistance of a building and configuration group) and there are a million reasons why it could've been made that way. Possibly they couldn't go to an understanding across interior divisions on which fields to cut from the structure and now the client (and friends' transformation numbers) needs to pay for it. Perhaps they didn't appropriately organize the significance of building a responsive structure since they didn't comprehend what percent of their clients utilize the site on versatile. Perhaps they did and you were in the minority, so the portable highlights were deliberately deprioritized! Almost certainly, in case you're being met by a to some degree better than average organization, in the first or second round you will get questions like, What is your preferred item to utilize? and How might you improve that item? So help yourself out now and begin thinking in this outlook throughout the day, consistently. At the point when you use something that was anything but difficult to the point that you didn't consider it, pause for a minute to value that! Furthermore, consider how hard it most likely was for that item group to convey something so delightfully straightforward. Beginning to see your reality with this attitude will assist you with beginning reasoning like an item supervisor before you land your very frist work. Inside the universe of item the executives, there are a wide range of bearings you can decide to go in. Your experience will differ contingent upon the sorts of items you chip away at and the kinds of organizations you work with. In any case, regardless, these three initial steps should assist you with making sense of if this vocation is directly for you and ideally touch off your energy for it! Also, if it's as of now touched off, look at these open item the board positions now.

Be Nice Honey vs. Vinegar
Be Nice Honey vs. Vinegar One of my old bosses used to say you attract more flies with honey than with vinegar. This was a guy who was always pleasant, even in some very tense meetings. He knew how to hold it together, and it didnt seem hard for him. When you were around him you felt like you mattered, as an individual. This advice is excellent, and I think of it regularly. Too often, my first inclination is to be defensive, on-guard, or somehow protect myself. Maybe this is because of the fair amount of teasing we did as kids (4 boys, close in age) of course, it was all in love or whatever, and I never really felt unsafe, but perhaps that has kept me on my toes. Who knows, maybe it has nothing to do with my brothers and all to do with my personality. Anyway, my first inclination is to be vinegar, not honey. Ive learned over the years that Vinegar Networking is not good. No one likes to be around vinegar, and the vinegar person usually ends up bouncing from conversation to conversation, or alone. Take this idea and transfer it to online communication, whether its a private email or a very public social posting what happens is that you start to develop a brand. People think oh boy, this person is posting again I better watch out! Or, I better protect myself. Or I cant believe what they are going to say, or how they are going to say it. You dont need to muddy up your brand with vinegar. You are doing a good enough job muddying up your brand with confusing taglines and messaging Recently I got a blog comment that I decided to approve but I had to edit out almost a half dozen offensive words. Folks, if you need to do that, do it in a closet, or scream into your pillow. If you are here to help others, or get help from others, try some honey. You dont have to be that lame professor in college who never gives As we dont all need to be critics, or critical. From Passion to Profit How to Turn your Hobby into a Dream Job
From Passion to Profit How to Turn your Hobby into a Dream Job We love a good story of dreams coming true. Think of Bake Offâs Nadia, whose journey from enthusiastic amateur to big-time pro is the stuff of national legend. But we canât all bake the Queenâs birthday cake⦠So how else can you turn your hobby into a lucrative career? Is it just blue sky thinking? Is it only for the very well-off? Or might it actually be possible to make a living doing what we love? Ambitious Women Research conducted into so-called âpassionate workersâ by the Centre for Economic and Business Research, YouGov and Samsung found that more than one in ten British workers have given up their day jobs to transform their hobby into a career. Separate research for the Guardian by Start Up Loans and YouGov found that over 85% of Brits who started a business founded on their hobby gained greater job satisfaction than in their standard employment. But crucially, these figures are higher for younger people, and higher for women. Nearly 25% of 18-34-year-olds were planning to implement their hobby as their career, while 13% of women were intending to do so (compared to 11% of men). There are plenty of inspiring examples of dedicated female entrepreneurs, determined to make their passion their work. Here are just a few of them: Alice Rossiter Hobby: flower arranging With a blooming passion for flowers, Alice Rossiter gave up a job as a product manager for tech startups and founded her own business, Aliceâs Table, which combines creativity and entrepreneurship to empower women through flower arranging. A unique and innovative approach, Aliceâs business has really taken root in the US â" âI am always pinching myself that I get to call this work!â, she explains. Leyla Kazim Hobby: food and travel Leyla Kazim started a blog in 2012, charting the globe-trotting, culinary adventures she undertook in her time off from a software company. Eventually, however, she made the brave step to become a full-time food and travel blogger. Thanks to fantastic photography and writing skills, Leyla is now paid to write content or produce videos for the likes of Jamie Oliver, alongside continuing her own blog and social media channels. Hannah Dale Hobby: painting Lots of people aspire to make their living as an artist, but Hannah Dale managed to make that dream a reality. She began by selling her paintings to shops and galleries, before deciding it would make better business sense to print her designs on greeting cards. Things grew from there, and she now has a business, Wrendale Designs, selling cushions, wallpaper, stationary and more (with a tidy £3 million annual turnover). Existing Jobs? Of course, itâs possible to apply for an established position which allows you to practise your hobby as part of your job. There are creative roles out there, whether your hobby is crafting or running, cookery or yoga, jewelry-making or collecting vintage clothes. If your hobbyâs on the arty side, then a good place to start looking for such positions is the Arts Councilâs dedicated Arts Jobs site. Alternatively, a great way to monetize a passion can be to teach. What about becoming an art or music teacher, running cookery or photography courses, or qualifying as a yoga coach or therapist? Go it Alone? Often these jobs are highly competitive, however, and they might not fit exactly with your skills. What if your hobby is hunting for obscure mushrooms, like Megan DeMarco, marketing director of the startup AcousticSheep? Hence why the focus of the above research was on people who had left their job and set up their own business. Your passion is your passion, after all, so it might be up to you to find a way to make it sell. So whatâs the secret to independently taking your hobby to the next level, and starting a business or blog, as Alice Rossiter, Leyla Kazim and Hannah Dale all did? Here are some top tips: Be specific â" Know what it is youâre offering and have a clear and distinctive brand voice. Upskill â" Go on courses to transform an amateur passion to a professional skill. Cultivate a following â" According to the marketing theory 1000 True Fans, the most important thing for a small business is an avid fanbase of 1000 individuals (people who will buy what you sell, read what your write, listen to what you sing). If you make just £100 from each of them per year, then youâve got £100,000 in the bag. Use social media â" As well as gaining those essential fans, social media can provide revenue, through advertising or sponsoring, and can be helpful if you decide to crowdfund part of your business. Research and research (and then research again) â" Know the market, know the competition, know what others are charging for your product or how they are selling themselves. Have a plan (and stick to it) â" Be rigorous with yourself, identify where youâre trying to get to and how youâll get there, and donât allow yourself to veer off course. Words of Warning If you get a job that matches your hobby perfectly, then thatâs absolutely fantastic (and hats off to you!). If you decide to go it alone, then just be careful. Research by AXA found that 60% of those who grew a business from their hobby did not earn sufficient income to do it full-time. Therefore, especially if youâre at the beginning of your career, itâs a good idea to continue your hobby alongside a principal job. This will give you stability as well as experience and essential skills. By pursuing your hobby on the side, youâll also be testing the waters. Think about whether your passion would withstand the transition from an enjoyable pastime to a full-time job, and remember the potential pitfalls of mixing work and life. Is your hobbyâs non-work status actually intrinsic to what you enjoy about it? Next Steps So keep on having fun with your hobby while working on making it a more professional option, through attending courses and by doing research. Start a blog about your culinary creations or try selling bits and pieces on platforms like notonthehighstreet.com or Etsy. See how it goes. You never know where it might take you⦠Anyone fancy baking a cake for Her Majestyâs 95th? Working with a Conscience - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Working with a Conscience - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career A friend of mine recently took on a position at a company that she felt had poor business practices in the past. She was concerned about how she would be able to handle the potential situation where her ethics and the ethics of the company did not align. While, ultimately, she chose to take the position because she felt that the likelihood of such a situation arising would be minimal, this is something that we should consider. Ethical issues come up in many companies whether the potential is expected, as in the case of my friend, or unexpected. When faced with these dilemmas, itâs important to have a solid grounding in what is most important to you. If you have a good understanding about what drives you, you will know how to handle these extreme situations. When faced with a questionable business activity, you first have to wonder, âwhy am I questioning this decision?â Generally, that question will provide enough insight to help guide you. The other question should be âwhat matters more to me, my job or something else?â If you find your conscience pulling you in a particular direction, there is probably a strong reason behind that, cultural, religious, or otherwise. Weâve had highly publicized cases of whistleblowers going against their organizationâs wishes. Not all cases of conflict between a company and individualâs values are so cut and dry. It may be worthwhile to discuss your situation with your loved ones or colleagues, just ensure that conversation doesnât slide towards gossip. More importantly, if your concerns remain, you must have a conversation with your superiors about your dilemma. Ask to be reassigned, ask for the task to be reassigned, explain your moral dilemma. If you do find that you are experiencing an ethical dilemma, be sure to do all that you can to minimize the impact to your future.
